Due: Mood board for your restaurant.
Make a collage of the colors, textures and elements that you will be using as inspiration to develop the visual identity for your restaurant. Use actual fabrics, paints, textures, etc. and glue them to a piece of foam core board. Size of the board is not important, just make it at least 18" x 24" or larger.
Ideas: Most fabric stores will let you cut small sample swatches of fabrics for free, so that is a great place to start for inspiration for colors and textures. [OMG, Forsythe Fabrics in Atlanta is one of the most awesome places EVER.] Also, paint swatches from Home Depot or Lowes, samples of photo styles from magazines, things from Michael's or Hobby Lobby, printouts of a type palette, etc. Pretty much anything you find inspiring is fair game. There are piles of interior design magazines in Room 318 you are welcome to cut pictures out of.
Just be sure the board stays focused and doesn't become a mess. The point is that it is to be used as an inspiration guide for your future aesthetic decisions, so it needs to be clearly directed.

GD V: Magazine project for Tuesday, Sept. 11
Now that you all (except Kaley :) have nailed your mag titles, let's do some serious type explorations. Approach this like you are designing a logo. Go through the type library in the lab or whatever is available to you and type out your word in a number of different ways. The point is to explore all appropriate avenues. Does the word look best in all caps or all lowercase? does the word need an initial cap to communicate better? Try serif and sans serif. What seems to suit the personality of the word and the content of the magazine best? Does it need to be super bold, or italic, or both?
• do this relatively small to start, say around 18 pt. and gang them up on a page. Print them out and look at them. Dismiss the ones you know don't work.
• Then choose the ones with the best potential and print them out at around 6-7" long (this will probably be around 400-500 pt type). Print out each as a single word on a single piece of paper (don't gang them up.) Bring in at least 15-20 choices for class discussion.
As soon as we make some choices about typefaces, you will be customizing the type and altering it in some way. Go ahead and start thinking of ideas along these lines and by all means sketch out ideas for us to see and talk about.
Also, most magazines have "tag lines" or subtitles that further describe the topic of the magazine. Be thinking of what yours can be.

Between now and Tuesday, get together with other members of your group and brainstorm ideas for slogans to promote the Department of Art to other students on campus.
Try to use empathy and put yourself in the position of your fellow students when trying to strategize what might appeal or convince them to try an art class.
Think back: what made you want to take an art class? Can you write a slogan that would speak to that????
Each group must have a minimum of 30 slogans to present at the beginning of class on Tuesday. We will discuss them, identify the best, and work on how to create the most effective type solutions to communicate your message.
Also: bring a variety of drawing materials to class: pen and ink, pencils, colored pencils, watercolor, etc. Don't buy anything, just bring what you have around from your Foundations classes....also white drawing paper, any size, at least 8" x 10".

IMPORTANT: GD IV, V and VI for Thursday, Sept. 6
Reminder: we have an appointment at the Ingram Library tomorrow at 2:00pm to discuss effective methods of doing research for both information and images.
We'll hold the session on the third floor of the library in a room called the "Aquarium" (due to its double glass wall on one side). If you take the main elevators to the third floor, the door to the Aquarium will be almost right in front of you (the glass wall does not face the elevators).
You can either meet us there, or we will leave from Room 318 promptly at 2:05 and walk over. If you are running late, come join us at the Library.

GD IV, V and VI: Work day Wednesday, Sept. 5
I will be on campus tomorrow from 10-5pm to work with you all tomorrow. It is critical that we spend some quality, productive time together since we've had so many obstacles so far this semester! Come by when you can and we can work together one-on-one or in small groups....Remember, on Thursday, we go to the Ingram Library to talk about doing research and next Thursday we will be going on a field trip to Georgia State.

GD III class for Thursday, Sept. 6
Bring in perfectly evolved, beautiful symbol drawings for your object. This means for each one of you except Jose that there must be significant progress between Tuesday and Thursday in how well resolved it is. Exaggerate and interpret your object after you have nailed how it "reads" in b & w.
ALWAYS bring tracing paper, pencils, kneaded eraser, exacto knife, white artist tape to class. You will be needing lots of tracing paper this semester, so stock up.

2. Your photocopy of drawn letters with type anatomy terms written on them. [Reference the terms on the last sheet of your handout from last week, locate them on the letters on the photocopy, draw arrows, circle or otherwise indicate the term on a letter.]
3. Wear casual clothes. Weather permitting, we may be working outdoors.
