Capstone II syllabus [ART 4999]


Capstone II:  ART 4998:
Capstone II may only be taken during the same semester the candidate is enrolled in GD VI. Every effort should  be made to insure that this occurs the last semester before graduation. Senior Exit Shows will only be held during Spring Semester.

Course Objectives and Requirements:
Capstone II will consist largely of fulfilling the candidate’s Professional Portfolio goals as outlined in Capstone I, and will conclude in their participation in a group Senior Exit show at the end of Spring Semester. There will be a formal Mid-Term Faculty Committee Review of all work completed up until that point. It  will be determined by the Faculty Committee at that time that the candidate will be able to successfully complete all work before the Senior Exit Show at the end of the semester. If it is clear the candidate will not successfully complete their work in time for the Senior Exit Show, they will be asked to withdraw and take the course again.

Completion of all the following is Required:  
Each candidate must complete a branding identity for themselves using all or one word in their name. This logo will be applied consistently to a business card, letterhead/resume, website, and customized portfolio box.

All work listed below must be mounted and professionally presented in a customized portfolio box of their choosing. This box must be customized with the candidate’s name/logo.

All work listed below must also be mounted and professionally presented during the group Senior Exit Show.

Candidates will continue developing the work outlined in their Written Proposal and Statement of Intent created during Capstone I.

Each candidate’s portfolio and Senior Exit Show must contain a minimum of  7 of the following 9 projects depending on the candidate’s intended area of specialty:
• Body copy in a multiple page design project (magazine cover and layout)
• Layout utilizing experimental typography 
• Project showing original photography and/or illustration
• Collateral system including logo, identity and supporting collateral, some 3-D capabilities
• Poster or book cover series (must be at least 3)
• PSA, non-profit, social awareness or advertising campaign
• Publication, book or brochure system
• New projects developed with input of Graphic Design faculty (written proposal required)
These requirements are  intended to result in a well-rounded portfolio of 12-15 pieces appropriate for use in interviews and employment applications .

Candidates will also:
1. Complete executing a body of work with input from Graphic Design faculty.
2. Participate in  the Mid-Term critique with the Faculty Committee
3. Consistently re-evaluate their proposals and reflect on their progress.
4. Continue to re-define and hone their technical and conceptual studio abilities.
5. Actively participate with their peers in locating a site for the group Senior Exit Show,organizing and planning food and creating announcements/promotions for an opening reception.
It is the entire group’s responsibility to equally share any expenses incurred for the Senior Exit Show.

Learning Outcomes for Capstone I I in Graphic Design
At the conclusion of this course, the candidate should be able to:
1. Verbally articulate appropriate conceptual motivations  for all design decisions
2. Demonstrate a historical perspective and articulate artistic influences
3. Utilize an appropriate design and typographic vocabulary to successfully communicate a concept 
4. Demonstrate critical understanding of their work and the creative process in relation to traditions inherent in contemporary graphic design practice.

Outcome Assessment
A Faculty Committee will be chosen by the Graphic Design Faculty. 

There will be a formal Mid-Term Faculty Committee Review of all work completed up until that point. At that time, the candidate will be expected to present their work in a professional manner. It  will be determined by the Faculty Committee at that time if the candidate is likely to be able to successfully complete all work before the Senior Exit Show at the end of the semester. If it is clear the candidate will not successfully complete their work in time for the Senior Exit Show, they will be asked to withdraw and take the course again.

After the Seniori Exit Show is hung, the Faculty Committee will evaluate the success of the candidate’s efforts and assign a grade.

Capstone II, a BFA Exhibition and an oral defense will signify the culmination of the candidate’s academic career at University of West Georgia.

General Topics and Course Requirements:
• Mandatory participation in Peer Reviews
• Mandatory participation in  MId-Term Faculty Review
• Mandatory participation in Senior Exit Show
• Submission of personal logo design consistently applied as a brand identity on a resume, business card and website
• Development of content for professional resume and website
• Presentation of work in a customized professional portfolio box

Grades:
Grading scale: 100-90=A
89-80=B
79-70=C
69-60=D
under 59=F

Design of logo/resume/website 100 pts
Professional presentation of work in portfolio box 100 pts
Faculty Evaluation at Mid-Term 100 pts
Faculty Evaluation at Exit Show 500 pts
Professional craftsmanship of work in Show 100 pts
Consistent professional behavior during the semester 100 pts

The candidate’s final grade will be based on satisfactorily completing the above.

Week 15 Final pieces due before mounting for Senior Exit Show
Week 16 Prepare professional presentation/mounting of all pieces for Senior Exit Show
Week 17 Opening Reception for Senior Exit Show
